Role Overview
To provide emergency medical, fire fighting, and hazardous materials (HAZMAT) services to residents of Orange County.
Role Description
Respond to fire emergencies using appropriate fire control and extinguishment techniques; assessing structural factors; using, repairing, and maintaining equipment; assessing other factors of a chemical, electrical or hazardous nature; locating, dealing with, and removing injured persons
Provide emergency medical services to individuals by conducting an accurate initial assessment of physical condition; perform appropriate triage in mass casualty situations, selecting and using proper equipment, implementing appropriate medical techniques, and determining when to add additional resources
Maintain emergency apparatus and equipment following department SOG’s
Maintain stations by performing general housekeeping and making minor repairs when needed
Perform the duties of Firefighter/Medic to include developing, updating, and implementing fire pre-plans and other emergency planning
Able to initiate stabilization of a HAZMAT incident. Have knowledge and skills to operate at a hazardous materials incident safely and effectively, according to applicable regulations and professional standards.
Act in the position of shift supervisor in the absence of the Lieutenant
Develop and help implement shift level training in conjunction with the shift supervisor and the training officer. Ability to function as the departments lead mentor. Assist the Department leadership with training and technical expertise
Precepts, Mentors, and trains new employees
Represents the Department and the County in a positive and professional manner
Supports and encourages positive relationships between career and volunteer personnel
Attends and participates in professional meetings, training, and workshops
Embodies departments code of conduct for officers
Minimum Requirements
Employed two years as a Firefighter Medic with COFEMS
Department preceptor (within 1 year)
Released engine operator at first pull stations (within 1 year)
Able to communicate effectively in a leadership position
Must meet current physical condition requirements and maintain physical requirements, as required by standard operating procedures, including at least thirty (30) minutes of physical fitness activity each workday
Ability to use/learn programs in an efficient manner
Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Virginia driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
Maintain updated department required certifications
Basic knowledge of the computer and internet

Physical Requirements
Verbally communicate in person, via telephone and telecommunications using the English language
Hear spoken information from co-workers, patients, physicians, and dispatchers and in sounds common to the emergency scene
Ability to lift, carry, and balance up to 125 pounds (250 with assistance)
Ability to interpret and respond to written, oral, and diagnostic form instructions
Ability to use good judgment and remain calm in high-stress situations and take on the role of a leader
Read road maps; drive vehicle, accurately discern street signs and address numbers
Read medication/prescription labels and directions for usage in quick, accurate, and expedient manner
Communicate verbally with patients and significant others in diverse cultural and age groups to interview patients, family members, and bystanders
Discern deviations/changes in eye/skin coloration due to patient’s condition and to the treatment given
Document, in writing, all relevant information in prescribed format considering legal ramifications
