Role Overview
Performs intermediate human support work assisting and advising patrons, developing and presenting programs, scheduling and publicizing programs, and related work, as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Youth Services Librarian.
This will be an active role for Summer 2024. Duration of the role will last 12-14 weeks with an end date in July 2024.
Role Description
Develops and presents programs for children and youth under guidance from the Youth Services Librarian; works with the Youth Services Librarian to ensure programs are targeted to the development level of the desired audience.
Reviews books and journals; attends training sessions to keep up-to-date with current program ideas.
Meets regularly with other youth services staff to ensure consistency of programming and services.
Maintains sign-up sheets; confirms library programs, as needed.
Schedules and publicizes programs, including preparing press releases for local media and updating the Library's online events calendar; prepares flyers for in-house publicizing of events.
Assists with the creation of Library bulletin board displays to promote Library programs and materials.
Assists with the Summer Reading Program, including taking registrations, issuing prizes, duplicating materials, preparing displays and promotional materials, and other tasks as assigned by the Youth Services Librarian.
Performs related tasks, as required.
Approximately 20 hours per week
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
General knowledge of library procedures, methods, and techniques; general knowledge of and interest in books, including reader interest levels; general knowledge of the needs and reading interests of children; thorough knowledge of office procedures and records maintenance techniques; skill in the use of library equipment, materials, and resources; ability to interact with children of varying ages, both individually and in group settings; ability to conduct entertainment and education programming and performance skills; ability to meet the public with poise and self-assurance; ability to deal tactfully and courteously with library patrons; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, co-workers, and patrons.
Education and Experience
Associate Degree from an accredited college or university. Minimal experience working and interacting with children. Other equivalent education and work experience may be considered in meeting the minimum education and experience requirements.
Special Requirements
Possession of appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
