Glastonbury , CT - This April , the Town will commence reconstruction work on Main Street from Ripley Road to New London Turnpike . The project will provide significant improvements to pavement conditions as well as added safety measures and recreational enhancements for pedestrians , cyclists , and motorists . Work is slated to begin on or around April 1 , 2024 and will continue for approximately 120 days . Isolated lane closures and on - street parking limitations are anticipated throughout the project duration .
   The project generally consists of full width pavement rehabilitation over the entirety of the project limits . Milling and paving operations will be restricted to the overnight hours; however , other project component work will occur during day - time construction hours .
   Additional project work will include:
   Minor road widening at select locations to better accommodate cyclist safety
   Full reconstruction of existing brick snow shelfs to eliminate elevation variations
   Construction of a raised median island near the southerly project limits to reduce vehicular lane width and calm traffic speeds entering the Town Center
   Pedestrian safety enhancements achieved through the use of visually - prominent , decorative mid - block crosswalks and reduction of crossing distances wherever possible
   Increase to roadway shoulder width on both sides to provide greater separation between cyclists and motorized vehicles
   Limited concrete sidewalk replacement and storm drainage work
   This project is supported by the State Local Transportation Capital Improvement grant ( LOTCIP ) , which will fund 100% of construction costs . The design was completed by the Town of Glastonbury Engineering Division and the construction will be inspected and administered by Town staff .
   The subject area was last paved in 1998 , thus maintenance operations at this time are necessary to ensure longer - term viability of the overall Town Center pavement structure and cost - effective pavement management .  
   A Public Information Hearing was held for this project on March 22 , 2022 as part of the Town Council meeting , and corresponding notices were mailed to tenants and property owners located within the project area . With work slated to begin this April , the Town is hosting an additional project review session for community convenience on
   Monday , March 18 , 2024 at 5:00 PM
    . During this session , Town staff will review the project scope and address citizen questions . The meeting will be offered in a hybrid format to allow for attendance in - person at Town Hall Council Chambers or virtually through Zoom .
