Deputy Secretary Todman emphasized the administration ' s commitment to providing quality affordable housing for vulnerable seniors and enabling them to live independently . The funds will be offered through HUD ' s Section 202 Supportive Housing for the Elderly program and will help non - profit organizations create new or rehabilitate existing homes that are resilient and energy efficient . In addition , $35 million of the funds will be allocated to create intergenerational housing units to meet the needs of households headed by seniors raising children . Today in Akron , OH , Deputy Secretary Adrianne Todman of the U . S . Department of Housing and Urban Development ( HUD ) announced that $115 million in grant funding is available to support the development and improvement of affordable rental housing for low - income seniors . This funding opportunity is part of the Biden - Harris Administration ' s "Investing in America" tour , which aims to create and improve affordable homes for elderly Americans . The announcement took place at The Fairthorne , an affordable senior apartment building in Philadelphia , PA , and was attended by local and federal officials , including U . S . Rep . Dwight Evans ( PA - 03 ) . Assistant Secretary Julia Gordon highlighted the importance of these funds in addressing the persistent housing needs of seniors nationwide and supporting safer , healthier , and more energy - efficient homes . Section 202 grants offer tailored support services for elderly individuals aged 62 and older , including nutrition , transportation , education , and health services . Eligible seniors typically have incomes below 50 percent of the area median income , with most households earning less than 30 percent of the median for their locality .
