GENERAL DEFINITION:
This is unskilled and limited semi-skilled manual laboring work in the maintenance, repair, and construction of the City park grounds, Sports Complex, parkways, public lawns and/or related buildings/facilities.
This work involves performance of manual tasks requiring no special previous training or experience. The work is usually performed under immediate supervision and instructions are received at the beginning of each task assignment. Constant supervision is not always available for routine and repetitive tasks, which can be carried on without difficulty once they are learned. Employees may operate truck for hauling and picking up materials, supplies, equipment, and trash.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Regular attendance at work during normal business hours;
Participate in the construction, maintenance, and repair of park buildings, Sports Complex, playgrounds and playground equipment, athletic fields, swimming pool, and other public service facilities;
Check the safe operation of all playground equipment and repair the same;
Repair and construct bleachers;
Build and repair fence;
Assist in forming and finishing concrete;
Perform minor plumbing repair work;
Drive truck for pick up, hauling, and delivery of park materials and supplies;
Operate lawn mower, weed eater, mosquito fogger, and other power tools;
Service equipment to keep in proper operating condition and report needed repairs to supervisor;
Perform general landscape and lawn maintenance including mowing, weeding, laying sod, and applying herbicides;
Trim trees and shrubs;
Perform litter and trash pick up;
Perform custodial work in public and portable restrooms;
Deliver commodities to various City buildings;
Maintain awareness of proper safety procedures and guidelines and apply these in performing daily activities and tasks;
Do any other functions that may be required by the Superintendent or any other appropriate supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge equivalent of a high school diploma preferred; some experience in performing general grounds maintenance work, or any equivalent combination of experience or training which would afford the applicant the referenced knowledge, skills, and abilities;
Knowledge of tools, equipment, methods and material used in a variety of parks construction, maintenance, and repair activities;
Knowledge of the precautions necessary to work safely with and around the general public and children;
Knowledge of the proper methods and procedures used in safely applying herbicides and pesticides;
Knowledge of the principles of the operation of motorized equipment sufficient to detect defective operation;
Ability to perform manual labor for extended time periods;
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public contacted in the course of work;
Ability to lay out physical work and to follow through with assigned tasks, often under adverse weather conditions;
Possess a valid Oklahoma Drivers license (Commercial Drivers license preferred), be insurable, and possess necessary commercial drivers license (if required).
SAFETY SENSITIVE POSITION
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Most of work is performed outdoors, during all seasons, and in inclement weather;
Some work is performed in confined areas, in close proximity to others, on slick and wet surfaces;
May be exposed to vibrations, loud continuous noise, offensive smells, dust, pollen, dirt, and water;
Exposed to injury from moving equipment, insect bites, poisonous plants, flying objects, slippery surfaces, hazardous materials, and traffic;
Must have strength to pull, lift, and push 50-pound objects on a frequent basis, and up to 100 pounds (such as a bag of cement) on an infrequent basis;
Must have flexibility to bend, twist, and reach;
Must have mobility to climb, crawl, walk, and continuously move from one place to another;
Must have dexterity to operate machinery and tools on uneven surfaces, etc.;
Must have stamina to exert oneself throughout the day in all weather conditions;
May be exposed to limited toxic conditions – herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers;
Crews involved in spraying grass, shrubs, or trees are required to use a respirator;
May work from ladders or other surfaces from 4 to 12 feet above floor or ground level;
Must be mentally and physically prepared for unforeseen emergencies at all times;
Manual dexterity and vision required to use hand tools and equipment, to drive a truck or tractor, and to see oncoming traffic and coworkers performing duties nearby;
Hearing and speech required to communicate clearly and distinctly in English, by telephone and face-to-face, in a semi-noisy environment;
Vision required to read and review written correspondence, reports, statistical and technical information, maps, computer screen, etc.;
Must be willing to periodically perform standby and call back duties, and be available for call outs during off duty hours.
