The City of Lancaster is seeking qualified applicants for a Fitter position in the Gas Department.
This is semi-skilled, entry-level work within the Lancaster Municipal Gas Department. Supervision is received from the General Manager, Operations Manager, Construction Supervisor, Crew Leader, or Fitter-in-Charge through a combination of written work orders and oral instruction. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion. This employee may supervise the work of a small number of employees of a lower classification.
Performs general labor related to gas pipeline installation tasks and takes responsibility for job completion assigned to one truck or crew. Performs all jobs required of a Utility Person or Part-time employee.
Follows all safety precautions. This includes being able to wear protective clothing and equipment which includes but is not limited to: Hardhat, Safety Glasses, hearing protection, fire resistant clothing, and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).
Uses and understands the various grades of ditch fill material, such as sand, grits, crushed run gravel, bank run gravel, washed gravel, dirt, blacktop and concrete.
Erects and properly places traffic safety signs and gas hazard warnings.
Identifies most pipe sizes and pipe fittings. Responsible for proper installation of fittings and gas related materials, such as anodes, regulators and stop boxes.
Performs gas pipeline pressure tests for leak detection. Re-establishes gas services to the customer when needed. Builds domestic gas meter sets. Replaces gas department service lines, using proper fittings, piping, and other components.
Works with bare steel, coated steel, and plastic pipe and fittings, understands different fittings used for all pipe in system and is able to select fittings to match installation requirements.
Fitter may be required to direct a small group of utility person or part-time employees to complete a job. Work shall be inspected by Crew Leaders, Fitter-in-Charge, or a Construction Supervisor while in progress and upon completion.
Fitter should be familiar with pipe locator and combustible gas instruments and operation of each.
Fitter should be aware of the use and maintenance of equipment as follows: Utility bed trucks, dump trucks, winch truck, pipe trailer, air compressors, jack hammers, horizontal directional boring machines, plastic pipe heat fusion, generators, and irons, all hand tools related to gas department operations.
Must be able to operate electronic devices and other technology; such as, GPS equipment, iPad tablets, laptop computers.
Employee shall be subject to 24-hour call in, work overtime, emergency stand-by duty, etc.
Employee shall be subject to random drug and alcohol testing per DOT 49 CFR, Ch. 1, Part 199
Employee shall perform all other duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent.
Must be able to successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination, drug testing, criminal background check and driver’s license check.
Possession of a valid State of Ohio Class A CDL driver’s license (must be obtained within the employees’ probationary period), and continued insurability with the Gas Department’s vehicle insurance provider.
Be able to speak and deal politely and intelligently with employees and the general public.
