Sausalito Library Un - Employee Union Ratifies Labor Agreement for FY 2022 23 30 September 2022 ( news )

City of Sausalito workers
represented by Local 1021 of the Service Employees International Union ( SEIU ) have approved a contract for fiscal year 2022 - 23 .
The vote was taken by union members during the week of September 19 . SEIU membership includes representatives from all City departments except the Sausalito Police Department .
The
new contract
will go into effect upon its approval by the Sausalito City Council , which will hold a special meeting for that purpose at 11:00 a . m . on Tuesday , October 4 . Management and finance staff are not represented by SEIU but will be subject to the same terms as union members , with minor exceptions .
The most significant change from the
previous contract
is the inclusion of a
side letter
implementing a four - day , 36 - hour workweek for City employees other than public safety and wastewater collection personnel . City offices , with the exception of the Sausalito Public Library , will close on Fridays . The earliest day that Friday closures will go into effect is Friday , October 14 .
To compensate for the loss of hours from a 40 - hour workweek , employees affected by the change will receive a one - time , non - pensionable payment of $5 , 000 during the pay period that the Council approves the contract . An additional $3 , 500 payment will be made to employees who are still on the City payroll as of April 15 , 2023 . The agreement does not have a cost - of - living adjustment .
The change to a four - day , Monday through Thursday schedule is expected to help City employees improve their work - life balance , reduce weekly commute time , save money on gas , and reduce carbon emissions . Approximately 90% of City employees live outside of Sausalito and drive to work .
City Manager Chris Zapata estimates that the City will save a minimum of $100 , 000 this fiscal year from the implementation of a 36 - hour workweek .
The shorter workweek will remain in effect until it is terminated by mutual agreement , or a successor agreement to the fiscal year 2022 - 23 contract is ratified and adopted , or the agreement is terminated by either party on or after August 1 , 2023 . The contract stipulates that the City and SEIU will begin negotiations on a 2023 - 24 agreement no later than March 15 , 2023 .
