Avondale Public Works receives two AZ Water Association Awards
The City of Avondale received two awards from the AZ Water Association: Water System Project of the Year , and Operations Supervisor of the Year . The awards were presented at a ceremony during the annual AZ Water Conference in Phoenix on April 13 .
The City of Avondale , through Carollo Engineers , Inc . , was selected for the AZ Water Association’s 2022 Water System Project of the Year for the North Avondale Water Supply Project . The city is entitled to 5 , 416 - acre - feet ( AF ) per year of Colorado River water delivered through the Central Arizona Project ( CAP ) . On August 6 , 2018 , City Council approved an Intergovernmental Agreement with the City of Phoenix to allow Phoenix to divert , treat , and transport a portion of Avondale’s CAP water to a service interconnection with Phoenix’s existing water distribution system near the intersection of 107th Avenue and Indian School Road in Phoenix . As part of the agreement , the City of Avondale was responsible for the construction of the Interconnect facility . The facility and associated infrastructure components were named the North Avondale Water Supply ( NAWS ) project . The NAWS project officially started construction on April 23 , 2020 , and was substantially complete on January 15 , 2021 . The $9 million project has been operating successfully , bringing Avondale’s Central Arizona Project allocation directly into the city’s water distribution system .
“The North Avondale Water Supply is an innovative project that further enhances Avondale’s water resilience . The cooperation between the cities of Avondale and Phoenix , along with the collaboration of the entire project team , has made this project successful , ” said Avondale Public Works Director Kirk Beatty .
Meanwhile , Avondale Public Works operator Miguel Ayala received an award for AZ Water Association ' s 2022 Large Treatment Plant Operations Supervisor of the Year . An employee of the city for more than 15 years , Miguel Ayala has Grade 4 ADEQ certification across all 4 disciplines in Water and Wastewater and was the first operator on the Public Work’s team to accomplish what is known in the water industry as a 4X4 . Miguel , who grew up in Avondale , graduate from Agua Fria High School and earned his Associate’s Degree from Estrella Mountain Community College .
“The City of Avondale is very proud of Miguel . He is a great supervisor who is well respected by his team and coworkers , and he exhibits the highest degree of professionalism and technical knowledge . We are fortunate to have Miguel on the Avondale team , ” said Jeremy Abbot , Assistant Director for Avondale Public Works .
The AZ Water Association announced winners after evaluating criteria including operations , experience , adherence to regulatory standards , and more . The AZ Water Association is a nonprofit educational organization founded in 1928 whose mission is preserving as well as enhancing Arizona’s water environment . More than 2 , 200 water and wastewater professionals throughout the state belong to the association .
