On National Equal Pay Day , we ' re shining a light on the unfair gender wage gaps that exist . It ' s crazy to think that women have to work so much longer to earn what men made in the previous year . These disparities add up over a lifetime , resulting in women missing out on millions of dollars they rightfully deserve . Equal pay is not just about money , it ' s about upholding our core values of equality , dignity , and fairness as a country . We ' re constantly striving for progress towards equal pay because when women succeed , we all do . While we ' ve made some strides in narrowing the gender pay gap , there ' s still a long way to go . Women are still earning less than men in the majority of professions , especially women of color and women with disabilities . The pay gap stems from systemic obstacles that women face in accessing well - paying jobs and opportunities . Additionally , women often bear the brunt of caregiving responsibilities , which can impact their work and career advancement . It ' s crucial that we prioritize closing the pay gap to ensure a thriving economy that includes all women . My Administration has taken steps to support working families , create job opportunities , and address the challenges women face in the workforce . Through legislation like the American Rescue Plan and other initiatives , we ' re working to level the playing field for women in the workforce . We ' re also focusing on providing affordable and high - quality childcare to support working parents . Overall , we ' re committed to creating a more equitable and inclusive workforce for all . Also , I wanted to mention that I passed a law that gives pregnant and nursing workers more protections . We ' ve also been supporting women - owned businesses by giving them $5 . 1 billion in loans through the Small Business Administration . To promote fair pay , we ' re leading by example in the Federal Government by closing wage gaps . We ' ve made a rule that stops Federal agencies from considering an applicant ' s previous pay when determining their future salaries , which helps eliminate unfair pay differences . We ' ve also proposed regulations to improve pay equity and transparency for workers on Federal contracts . We ' re making progress , but there ' s still more to do . I ' m urging Congress to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act , which would increase transparency and help fight pay discrimination . On National Equal Pay Day , let ' s double our efforts to ensure women are paid what they deserve and give our daughters the same opportunities as our sons . Let ' s remember our duty to uphold equality , dignity , and fairness for all Americans , as stated in our nation ' s values . Therefore , I , JOSEPH R . BIDEN JR . , President of the United States , proclaim March 12 , 2024 , as National Equal Pay Day . I urge all Americans to recognize the value of women ' s skills and their contributions to the workforce , acknowledge wage inequality as unjust , and join efforts to achieve equal pay . Signed , JOSEPH R . BIDEN JR . , March 11 , 2024 .
