Creating a Shaded Fuel Break
When people talk about wildfire mitigation , we often hear the words “fuel break” and “fire break” used interchangeably . The goal of both is to create a cleared area or an obstacle that fire will not spread across .
But when we talk about a “shaded fuel break” , we are referring to areas under trees . Our goal is to create space between the ground and the tree branches so that any ground fire will not spread vertically up into the tree canopy . The shade is also supposed to limit plant growth under the trees , thus minimizing ground fire intensity and horizontal fire spread .
When you create a shaded fuel break in the 5 - 30 - 100 foot zones around your building structures , you improve the buildings’ wildfire resilience and increase their chance of survival .
Want to see it in action? A wildfire coalition in Austin , TX has created an excellent
