The Summer season is approaching , and with changes in weather and family schedules that commonly occur at this time of year we wanted to send an important reminder about safety in and around South Florida pools and waterways . We hope that the tips below will improve our community ' s water safety no matter the age , point out common swimming hazards , and provide educational resources for additional water safety skills .
Tip #1: Learn the most common water dangers by age group .
According to Water Smart Broward , the causes of drowning incidents tend to follow a predictable pattern by age . Infants should have dedicated adult supervision at all times , specifically around bathtubs and any container capable of holding more than two inches of water . Toddlers should also be supervised continuously , especially around swimming pools . Older children should be made aware of the dangers in rivers , lakes , and canals . Broward County has hundreds of lakes and more than 165 miles of navigable canals that are important for drainage and water management , so it ' s vital to know how to stay safe around them .
Tip #2: Water visibility and depth are overlooked hazards .
These are among the most treacherous hidden concerns that people of all ages often miss in Florida lakes , canals , and other open bodies of water . Waterways in the City of Sunrise have varying shoreline slopes and depths , which means water may be more shallow than expected . Uneven rocks beneath the surface , animals such as snakes or alligators , as well as entangled vegetation add to the need to proceed with extreme caution . While some older waterways may be deeper or have a pronounced drop - off , never dive head - first into water of unknown depth . Additionally , Winter temperatures or inclement weather effects such as lightning significantly elevate the risks of swimming .
Tip #3: Everyone should learn or refresh their water safety education .
The City of Sunrise Aquatics division—part of the Leisure Services Department—is doing its part to provide water safety education in three ways:
We partner with Broward County’s Swim Central program , which brings youth from surrounding elementary schools to the Sunrise Civic Center Aquatics Complex for swim lessons . Additional program partners have historically funded vouchers for swimming lessons for children ages 6 months to 4 years old . Learn more at

Since the mid - 1980s , Sunrise Fire - Rescue has been providing specialized operations—including hazardous materials , technical rescue , and dive - rescue—and today is one of only four teams in Broward County responsible for regional response to the specialized emergency incidents . On behalf of our lifeguards and first responders , we thank you for taking the time to learn about water safety in the hopes that it may save lives in the future .
