The WWTF Operator performs skilled work to control physical, chemical, and biological wastewater treatment processes. Also performs yard work, custodial and laborer tasks in maintaining grounds, buildings, structures, and equipment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Monitors performance of and operates mechanical devices designed to process wastewater and wastewater solids. Controls the quantity and quality of solids processed using laboratory test data, flow measuring devices, and control instrumentation. Conducts some routine laboratory tests and interprets results. Makes operating decisions in absence of supervisory personnel. Starts up and shuts down components of wastewater treatment processes as required and/or directed. Collects samples of wastewater and solids processing streams. Provides minor mechanical maintenance, adjustment and inspection to equipment as directed, and occasionally assists mechanics in dismantling or reinstalling process equipment. Requests maintenance for the repair, modification and/or improvement of equipment as needed. Performs custodial duties to maintain a neat and orderly work area. Keeps equipment/process operation log sheets. Operates vehicles as needed to efficiently operate and dispose of solid residues. Assists maintenance personnel as required in the installation, maintenance and repair of buildings, structures, and equipment. Responsibilities include working both inside and outside, while exposed to the weather, around and in sewage solids and sludge, odors, dust, possible exposure to toxic conditions and sometimes close quarters such as manholes, tanks, or wells.
