Welcome New Councilmember , John McCormick
On Monday night , the City Council heard from seven civic - minded , strong candidates who applied to fill the unplanned vacancy on the City Council . After interviewing each candidate , the City Council unanimously selected John McCormick to serve on the City Council until the next regularly scheduled municipal election in November 2024 . We look forward to working with Councilmember McCormick .   To read more about him , go to the online
news storyannouncing his appointment . We also sincerely thank the other candidates who stepped up and were willing to serve our community .

Register to Vote and/or Become a Poll Worker for the March 5 , 2024 Primary Election
The 2024 Presidential Primary is almost a month away , so now is the time to update your registration , or register to vote for the first time . For more information visit Contra Costa Election’s
   Register to Vote webpage
.  You need to update your registration if you have changed your name , moved to a new address , want to change your party affiliation , etc .
Did you know that in Contra Costa County it takes approximately 1 , 600 poll workers to conduct a statewide election? Election Day would not be possible without poll workers . Poll workers are on the front lines of democracy , processing voters , issuing ballots , and maintaining voting equipment . Consider
   working as a poll worker
    .

New Fire Break to Protect Against Wildfire
The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District ( Con Fire ) broke ground this week on a project to create a shaded fuel break across southern Lafayette and Walnut Creek that will provide significant protection for residents of Rossmoor and southern Lafayette from a wildfire approaching from open space to the south .
The Lafayette/Walnut Creek Shaded Fuel Break ( LWCSFB ) project will take place along approximately 11 miles of open space to significantly reduce understory vegetation , dead and dying trees , and highly combustible brush which can act as fuel to quickly spread a wildfire .
Reducing the quantities of these fuels will lower the intensity and speed of a wildfire . Slowing fire spread allows more time for firefighters to carry out an effective evacuation , reduces the risk of residents being unable to escape an approaching fire , and provides essential opportunities for firefighting success by providing areas of lower fire intensity and enhanced fire lines .
While work is being carried out , residents in the area should expect:
Use of normal brush removal equipment such as woodchippers , mulchers , chainsaws , and trucks
Smoke on burn days . These days will be announced in advance and all burning will terminate before sunset . Burn piles will be used to get rid of brush in difficult to reach areas
Goat grazing: Goats are going to aid with brush removal by grazing in certain areas
The tree canopy formed by healthy mature trees will remain largely intact and the work is designed to minimize environmental impacts to wildlife and protected plants . LWCSFB is intended to restore fuel loading to more natural levels that prescribed fires can maintain . For more information , visit
   Con Fire’s website
.  If you have any questions about this work , please contact Capt . Chris Toler at 925 - 660 - 7461 .
