Slow Down Lafayette: Safe Driving Tips for Wet Weather
Drivers , did you know that stopping distances on a wet road may be twice as long as on a dry surface? Stopping distances at 35 mph in the rain are similar to stopping distances at 50 mph on a dry day . Also , reduced visibility means you will see hazards later , increasing your chances of a crash .
What can you do to help make Lafayette safer?
- Decrease your speed
- Provide extra space between you and other cars
- Look twice before crossing an intersection
- Replace your wiper blades and clean your windshield regularly
- Check your tires to be sure they have adequate tread
Sandbag Station Information
Did you know that during the rainy season , we stock two Lafayette sandbag stations:
Corner of Mt Diablo Boulevard at Village Center ( across from the Veteran’s Memorial Building )
Corner of Camino Diablo and Loveland ( across from the corporation yard )
The “fill - them - yourself” sandbag stations are available 24/7 for residents concerned about flooding on their property . To ensure sufficient sand and bags are available , please only take what you need . It is recommended to bring your own shovel and wear gloves . Filling sandbags is easier with two people . Only fill the bag one - third ( 1/3 ) to one - half ( 1/2 ) full - This keeps the bag from getting too heavy and enables you to stack the bags with a good seal . More information is on our website at
www . lovelafayette . org/sandbags
.
