POSITION:
Under close supervision, assist with installing, repairing, and maintaining traffic signals systems and street lights in the city. Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class. Incumbents in this class may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.
TASKS
Installs, repairs, and maintains traffic signals and street lights;
Checks power inputs and reports power outages;
Installs and removes traffic and street light poles;
Assists in the diagnosis and repair of traffic signal errors and failures;
Repairs damaged traffic signals, street light conduits, and related wiring;
Realigns traffic signal heads and replaces traffic signal pull boxes and pushbuttons;
Operates lift truck and boom truck in the repair of traffic signals, street lights, and removal of poles;
May respond to traffic signal problems and outages during working hours and on-call.
QUALIFICATIONS:
High school diploma or equivalent, AND one-year experience installing, repairing, and maintaining streetlights and traffic signals OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must obtain a Professional Certification in Traffic Systems and Street Lighting within the probationary period.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
Knowledge of traffic signal and street lighting maintenance and repair techniques, use of equipment and tools used in traffic signal and street light repairs, occupational hazards, and safety guidelines;
Skilled in repairing, replacing, and maintaining traffic signals and streetlights, use of power and hand tools used in traffic signal and street light repair, following oral and written instructions, and establishing and maintaining productive working relationships
Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.
THE SELECTION PROCESS:
Applicants whose experience best meets the city's needs will be invited to participate in the examination for this position. Candidates must have access to a computer with internet, video, and audio capabilities to participate in our examination process.
The examination may consist of one or more of the following: (1) Training & Experience Evaluation, (2) Writing Exercise, and (3) Qualifications Appraisal Interview with a panel of subject matter experts. Candidates must receive a score of 70 or higher to have their names placed on the active eligibility list for one year. The top three ranks on the Eligibility List will have their application materials forwarded to the hiring authority for a selection interview.
