As we start a new year and mark Sudan ' s 68th anniversary of independence , we think about how the Sudanese people are still suffering because of the unnecessary conflict between the Rapid Support Force ( RSF ) and Sudanese Armed Forces ( SAF ) . This conflict has led to war crimes , crimes against humanity , ethnic cleansing , food shortages , mass displacement , and a failing healthcare system . It has also created deeper divisions in Sudan based on ethnicity , tribe , and region . About a year ago , we were hopeful about a political process that could restore democracy in Sudan . However , because of the decisions made by the warring parties , Sudan now faces one of the world ' s biggest humanitarian and displacement crises . The country ' s economy and infrastructure are in ruins . Many women and girls have been raped or live in constant fear of sexual violence due to lawlessness and lack of consequences . It is crucial that the RSF and SAF put an end to this brutal war and give power back to civilians , as the Sudanese people have been demanding for a long time . The United States will continue to support the people of Sudan and work towards ending the conflict so that in the coming year , the Sudanese people can finally experience the peace , security , and prosperity they deserve .
