Richardson Texas - Submissions Now Open for Third Annual Traffic Signal Box Art Contest 01 March 2024 ( news )

Submissions opened March 1 for the City’s annual Traffic Signal Box Art Contest . Technology and Education is the theme for the third annual event , sponsored by City of Richardson and the Richardson Rotary Club .
“The Traffic Signal Box Art contest is a great way to showcase local artists and beautify our city at the same time , ” said Richardson Mayor Bob Dubey . “Technology and education is the perfect theme for this year’s contest . Technology and Richardson go hand in hand , as we have long been home to companies on the leading edge of technological innovation , and the University of Texas at Dallas makes us one of the few cities in DFW where you can go from Pre - K to a PhD without ever leaving home . ”
The contest is open to individual artists of all ages . A selection committee will review submissions and select contest finalists . The five winners will be determined according to three main criteria – creativity , adherence to the Technology and Education theme and artistic merit .
In addition to their artwork being showcased in the community , artists with winning entries will also receive $200 , a certificate and have their work published in the
Richardson Today
and other municipal communication channels .
Winning designs chosen for the traffic signal boxes will also be showcased at the following intersections:
Alma Road and North Collins Boulevard
Brand Road and East Renner Road
Melrose Drive and Mimosa Drive
Rutford Avenue and Synergy Park Boulevard
East Spring Valley Road and South St . Johns Drive
Participating artists may submit one original digital design aligned to the Technology and Education theme that can be easily converted to a digitally printed wrap that covers the entire traffic signal box . All designs must be:
Original artwork and cannot include copyrighted or trademarked images , commercial logos or advertisements;
Designs should be free from any representation that includes traffic lights , signs or signal images of any kind;
Artists may sign their designs but should limit any other wording; and
All submissions should feature a design appropriate for viewing by all ages .

About the ContestThe Traffic Signal Box Art Contest was launched in spring 2022 through a joint partnership between the City of Richardson and Richardson Kiwanis Club . The competition is designed to beautify and colorfully enhance selected city streetscapes , showcase the talent of local artists , and works toward goals outlined in the City’s Public Art Master Plan .
