Arlington’s Director of the Department of Planning and Community Development ( DPCD ) , Claire Ricker is pleased to announce the appointment of Sarah Suarez , AICP , as its Assistant Director . The Assistant Director of DPCD assists with management , oversight , and administration of Town planning and community development initiatives , including the development and implementation of Town Plans , such as the Town’s Master Plan , and will be responsible for the Town’s affordable housing efforts and monitoring . Sarah Suarez began her role on December 13 , 2023 .
“Sarah brings a variety of experiences to the Town which is welcome as the Town prepares to update its Master Plan , ” said Claire Ricker . “Her background as a city planner and her experience in the Arlington community as a real - estate advisor brings comprehensive knowledge of housing , municipal planning , and zoning to the team . ”
For the last decade Suarez worked as a Real Estate Advisor with Gibson | Sotheby’s International Realty ( formerly Bowes RE ) in Arlington . During this time , she analyzed town - specific zoning regulations and assisted both residential and commercial clients with zoning analyses and special permits . Prior to her real estate work Suarez served as the Senior Planner for the City of Hallandale Beach , Florida . In Hallandale Beach , she reviewed both small and large - scale residential and commercial building plans , conducted community outreach and engagement activities , developed relationships with local business leaders and civic groups , assisted with departmental budgeting , and mentored junior staff .
“Arlington is an amazing community that I first fell in love with as a teenager . I have family who are longtime Arlington residents and I would stay with them during the summers , ” said Suarez . “I am so excited to now join the DPCD team and look forward to working with residents , businesses , and the Redevelopment Board and Affordable Housing Trust as Arlington looks toward its future . ”
Suarez holds a Master of Urban and Regional Planning from Florida Atlantic University and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from the University of West Florida . Suarez earned an American Institute of Certified Planners ( AICP ) certification in 2011 , has held a LEED AP designation from the US Green Building Council ( USGBC ) since 2009 , and has been a member of the National Board of Realtors® since 2014 .
