Thursday , 1/04/2024 - The Village of Bartlett has received several questions from residents about the increasing number of buses from Texas that are dropping off migrant passengers unannounced in suburban communities . In most situations , the migrants are dropped off at different METRA train stations with paid train tickets to travel to their final destination in Chicago . These bus dropoffs appear to be coordinated with the inbound train schedule , and no issues have been reported .
Bartlett has been in communication with surrounding towns , along with the DuPage County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management , Kane County Office of Emergency Management , Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security , and the Office of Emergency Management and Communications on how to best handle this type of situation .
On December 24 , 2023 , the Bartlett Police Department responded to the METRA train station and discovered 60 migrants had been dropped off by a chartered bus from Texas . Each person had a train ticket and was waiting to head to Chicago . After learning this information , the Village of Bartlett followed its established protocol , ensuring the migrants ' safety and assisting them onto the inbound train . The village communicated with Chicago about the anticipated arrival so the city could greet the migrants and take them to a shelter or coordinate efforts to reunite them with their families .
Currently , the Village of Bartlett is not planning any further action related to regulating or permitting bus arrivals of migrants . However , the village will continue monitoring the situation to determine if other action at the local level is necessary . Bartlett is also continuing communication with the above named agencies and with the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus to maintain the best approach for handling these situations .
