The National Guard recently had a disaster readiness exercise in Camp Shelby , Mississippi . This exercise , called PATRIOT , is a training opportunity for civilian emergency management and responders to work alongside the military during disasters . They tested their abilities to respond to simulated emergencies , including storms with mass casualties and the need for search and rescue operations . Over 300 people , including civilians , volunteers , and National Guard members from different states , took part in this year ' s exercise .
