   The FBI National Academy is dedicated to raising law enforcement standards and has been a recognized standard for professional continuing education . Participants come from all states , U . S . territories , and over 150 partner nations . Police officers who attend the Academy return to their communities better equipped to handle criminal challenges . Being FBI National Academy graduates puts these officers in an exclusive group , comprising less than one percent of law enforcement officers in the country . They were carefully chosen by their departments and completed a 10 - week course at the FBI training facility in Quantico , Virginia , alongside about 250 other officers . During the course , they received instruction in various subjects such as law , behavioral science , forensic science , understanding terrorism/terrorist mindsets , leadership development , communication , and health/fitness . The Academy ' s primary goal is to support , promote , and enhance the personal and professional growth of law enforcement leaders by preparing them for the complexities and ever - changing challenges of their field . It achieves this by using innovative techniques , fostering excellence in education and research , and building partnerships worldwide . In Miami , Jeffrey B . Veltri , the special agent in charge of FBI Miami , announced today that four law enforcement officers from South Florida have graduated from the FBI National Academy , Session 289 , at a ceremony in Quantico , Virginia . These officers include Undersheriff Thomas W . Raulen from Indian River County Sheriff’s Office , Major Javier I . Ruiz from Miami - Dade Police Department , Sergeant Matthew L . Castillo from Miami Springs Police Department , and Major William R . Brannin from Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office . Established in 1935 with just 23 students , the Academy has grown substantially over the years and now enrolls over 1 , 000 students annually . It is widely regarded as one of the top law enforcement academies globally .
