These officers include Undersheriff Thomas W . Raulen from Indian River County Sheriff’s Office , Major Javier I . Ruiz from Miami - Dade Police Department , Sergeant Matthew L . Castillo from Miami Springs Police Department , and Major William R . Brannin from Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office . Established in 1935 with just 23 students , the Academy has grown substantially over the years and now enrolls over 1 , 000 students annually . It is widely regarded as one of the top law enforcement academies globally .
