JOB DESCRIPTION
NATURE OF WORK
This position requires routine clerical work and assistance. Thoroughness and accuracy of the job requirements are a must, and responsibilities in this position are shared by employees under the same job title. The employee will be given in-service training by the Director of the Library.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
General
Checks out books to patrons on the library’s automated circulation system.
Checks in books that are returned to the library by means of the automated circulations system and finds the matching card.
Shelves books.
Repairs books.
Contacts patrons about overdue books.
Writes letters to patrons with seriously overdue books.
Empties book depository twice a day.
Works shelves in all areas of the library.
Assists patrons as needed.
Works rotating weekends as required.
Works overtime as required by Director.
Answers the telephone.
Works with magazines and newspapers keeping them in order and neatly filed.
Assist other employees with cleaning of the library.
Specific Responsibilities of the Job
Issues and renews library cards.
Shelves materials.
Inspects materials for damage and makes recommendations for repair or withdrawal.
Does keyboarding and filing.
Assists with library displays.
Assists in resolving patron disputes in the absence of a supervisor.
Communicates regularly with the Department Head.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Extended periods of sitting and using computers are common.
Extended periods of standing may be required.
Extended periods of walking may be required.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Training and experience equivalent to:
Spanish Speaking Preferred.
High School Diploma
Valid Alabama driver’s license with the ability to be insured by the city’s liability insurance carrier.
