Highlights from January 24 , 2024 Town Council Business Meeting
The Chapel Hill Town Council met for a Business Meeting on Wednesday , Jan . 24 at 6 p . m . at Chapel Hill Town Hall . The

Highlights of the meeting included:
Proclamation for Mentoring Month The Council proclaimed January as National Mentoring Month in Chapel Hill . Council Member Camille Berry read the proclamation and encouraged adults in our community to explore opportunities to mentor youth , including Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Triangle , 100 Black Men of Triangle East , and Blue Ribbon Mentor - Advocate Program .
Petition to Consider a Social Host Ordinance The Chapel Hill Campus & Community Coalition petitioned Council to consider adopting a Social Host Ordinance . The goal of such an ordinance would be to deter and prevent disruptive gatherings while holding accountable those who still violate the ordinance .
Public Comment on a Cease - Fire Resolution in Gaza Recently , Council has received requests from community members to issue a resolution calling for a ceasefire in the Israel - Hamas war . Council has also received requests from community members who do not want Council to issue such a resolution . Council declined to issue a resolution and the Mayor made remarks recognizing the tragedy of the war , the complexity of the issues , and the impact on the local community .
Update on North - South Bus Rapid Transit ( NSBRT ) Chapel Hill Transit staff provided an update about planning for NSBRT , including project timeline , engineering milestones , and station design . NSBRT is a landmark investment in Chapel Hill’s transportation system that will create an 8 . 2 mile line stretching from Eubanks Road to Southern Village .

The Town of Chapel Hill Planning Department is hosting a series of Public Information Meetings for community members to learn about "Rewriting Our Rules: A LUMO Update" , a project to update the land use rules that shape our community . A session will be held from 6 to 7:30 p . m . on Wednesday , Jan . 31 , in Chapel Hill Public Library Meeting Room B . Staff will give a short presentation . They will be available before and after to answer questions .
Refreshments are available to attendees . Childcare will not be available .

Help Design an Inclusive Playground
Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation invites community members , children , and adults of all abilities to help design our new inclusive playground at Chapel Hill Community Center Park . This exciting project aims to create a space where people of all abilities can play together and enjoy the benefits of outdoor recreation .
Barrs Recreation Playground Equipment , a leading provider of accessible playground equipment , will join us for two public listening sessions .
Sunday , Feb . 11 , 12–2 p . m . at the Chapel Hill Public Library Meeting Room B , 100 Library Drive
Thursday , Feb . 15 , 6–8 p . m . at the Chapel Hill Community Center Meeting Room , 120 S . Estes Drive
Our listening sessions are interactive , relaxed , and open conversations about what types of features and amenities should be included in the re - imagined inclusive playground . Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation is committed to creating a playground that promotes inclusivity and encourages all members of our community to engage in outdoor recreation .

Registration for the 2024 Peoples Academy Is Open!
The Peoples Academy teaches you how City Hall works and helps you discover ways to actively participate in community processes . We invite Chapel Hill residents and anyone else connected to our community to this free program .
Classes will take place every Thursday and Saturday , between February 22 and March 23 , 2024 . There will be dinner , childcare , and interpretation and translation into Spanish . And it ' s all free .
