   Sign up for Boxerwood ' s Backyard Compost Challenge 2024!
    
   Sign up by March 1st to be a part of Boxerwood ' s fourth annual Backyard Compost Challenge! This citizen - science project aims to find out how much food waste Rockbridge County households can keep out of the landfill if given the chance . Participating households will receive a free outdoor composter , hand scale , and kitchen scraps pail . All participants become part of a supportive and knowledgeable citizen - scientist
   community .
    
   The opportunity is open to 80 households in Lexington , Buena Vista , and Rockbridge County . Registration is done by lottery , with a focus on households with school age children . The 10 - week challenge begins March 9th and ends May 18th . Each week , participants collect their compostable food scraps , weigh their total , record the data , and toss the scraps in their new composter .
   By completing these few steps as a community , participating households can keep many thousands of pounds of waste out of the landfill , take a climate - positive action , and create good soil for their gardens . All for free!
