The wheels are turning on a project that connects cyclists and pedestrians to new pathways throughout St . Charles County . The new BikeWalk project fills in the gaps between networks of existing recreational trails to provide multi - use paths along main roadways , especially in western parts of the county .
“This gives people who want to travel by bike or on foot the opportunity to get to and from school , work , and other common areas—while keeping the road safe for both them and motorists , ” says Sara Nelson , Project Manager for the County Roads & Traffic Office . “It’s hard to bike and walk safely along high - traffic areas without this type of designated amenity , so this countywide initiative provides better guidance on getting from Point A to Point B that didn’t officially exist before for this type of transportation . ”
The project’s first phase is planned for three main corridors:
West Meyer Road/Wentzville Parkway/Schroeder Creek Boulevard
Interstate Drive/Prospect Road/Freymuth Road
Lake Saint Louis Boulevard/Paul Renaud Boulevard: Including improvements on several connection roadways—Ronald Reagan Drive , Technology Drive , Hawk Ridge Trail , Ridgeway Drive and Wyndgate Ridge Drive
Along with directional signage and pavement markings , the paths themselves are being upgraded as needed to accommodate foot and bike traffic . This includes replacing existing sidewalk with 10 - foot - wide multi - use path , and intersection improvements such as crosswalk striping , mid - block crossings and pedestrian signals . Other components of the project include installing benches and trash receptacles , and overall path maintenance . Motorized vehicles of any sort are not permitted on these routes .
“We have such great trail systems in the county , thanks to our partnerships with Great Rivers Greenway and municipalities , ” Nelson says . “The BikeWalk routes expand access to community resources for multi - modal users . While we hope it meets a need , we also hope to see these routes used for enjoyment and exercise , a chance to enjoy the community in a new way . ”
A public meeting about the BikeWalk project is scheduled for 5 - 7 p . m . , Wednesday , Jan . 31 , at Quail Ridge Lodge in Quail Ridge Park ( 560 Interstate Drive in Wentzville ) . Residents can share their feedback about the plans and find out more about the route’s usage and potential expansion .
