Hey , good news for families in New Mexico , Illinois , and Washington D . C . ! Thanks to a partnership between the DOE and HHS , a new tool called the Clean Energy Connector will connect low - income households to solar energy through the LIHEAP program . This pilot program will help up to 40 , 000 households save on energy bills and increase access to clean energy . This initiative supports President Biden ' s clean energy goals and aims to make solar energy more accessible and affordable for all . Illinois Governor JB Pritzker , New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham , and Washington , D . C . , Mayor Muriel Bowser all expressed their support for the Clean Energy Connector program , which aims to make solar energy more accessible to households across the country . The program , developed by NREL with support from various organizations , will help lower energy costs for families in need . Approximately 5 . 7 million households in the U . S . receive LIHEAP assistance for heating costs , and transitioning to solar energy can provide additional savings . The program will ensure that providers meet state consumer protection and savings requirements . States like Colorado , New Jersey , and New York have already participated , and more are encouraged to join the initiative by attending a webinar on April 10 . DOE also gathered a group of experts who gave strategic support to Connector development until 2023 . This group included the American Public Power Association , Clean Energy States Alliance , Edison Electric Institute , National Community Action Partnership , National Consumer Law Center , National Energy and Utility Affordability Coalition , National Energy Assistance Directors Association , National Rural Electric Cooperative Association , and Solar United Neighbors . A recent report from NREL revealed that if all technically possible community solar projects are implemented , they could provide power to more than 53 million households and over 300 , 000 businesses in the U . S . that can ' t have rooftop solar . This represents almost 1 terawatt of potential community solar capacity .
