We are thrilled to announce that Betsy Hughes , a recently - hired addition to the Public Works Department , has been named Employee of the Month for January 2024 . Despite being here for less than six months , she has already made a big impression at the customer service desk , earning the admiration and affection of colleagues and customers alike .
   Hailing from Sioux Falls , South Dakota , Betsy and her husband , Daniel , recently made the move to Kansas . Daniel grew up in Saint George , but Betsy spent her life in South Dakota , so Kansas represented a new experience .  
   Thankfully , Betsy has fallen in love with the community , and already feels at home . She says she appreciates the small - town feeling and the beautiful natural landscape , filled with more trees than she ' s ever been accustomed to . Most especially , she has enjoyed the small town feeling and relaxing atmosphere , saying this has been the calmest she’s ever felt in her life .  
    ( That “catch your breath” Kansas peace is something I enjoy , too . )
   Coworkers affectionately describe Betsy as a "beam of light" in the office , attributing her success to her friendly demeanor , exceptional problem - solving skills , and unwavering commitment to helping people . Customer service can be a challenging field , and Betsy’s kindness has made a big impression .
   Betsy’s secret to success in customer service lies in her ability to listen and empathize . As she wisely puts it , "Most importantly , people need you to listen . Sometimes they just want to be heard , and sometimes they just need your help to pinpoint the problem . " Her background growing up with four sisters likely contributed to her excellent communication and conflict resolution skills , as she emphasizes the importance of a supportive family .
   Betsy’s commitment to exceptional service goes above and beyond the call of duty . She tracks down information , ensures timely callbacks , and even when the answer is a simple acknowledgment of an unfulfilled request , as was the case with a recent land plat inquiry , she goes the extra mile to provide closure .
   Having dealt with challenging situations in her previous roles , Betsy shares valuable advice for handling frustration in customer service: "Let frustration roll off your back and use humor to lift your spirits back up after a tough interaction . A little laughter can go a long way . "
   In celebrating Betsy , our January 2024 Employee of the Month , we acknowledge not only her professional skills but also the positive impact she has had on our work environment .
