Protects and serves the animals and citizens of Windcrest in accordance with the State of Texas Laws and Windcrest Ordinance, Chapter 6 and in accordance with Animal Control Officers Training Manual.
Major Duties
Ability to: read, understand and explain to others applicable State and local laws, regulations, and ordinances.
Prepare clear and concise reports.
Present a positive public image; develop and maintain working relationships with animal agencies, animal organizations and co-workers.
Handle sick, injured, dangerous, and/or dead animals and decomposing animal carcasses in a safe and humane manner.
Learn and work with the physical and behavioral characteristics of animals.
Learn breed identification; learn and recognize symptoms of rabies and other common animal diseases.
Assist in the finding, capture and return of lost pets.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions; safely drive a vehicle; and work independently.
Care of impounded animals.
Provide maintenance for the pet waste/bag dispensers throughout the city.
Participate in the Trap-Neuter-Return Program and assist the caregivers associated with the program.
May also trap and transport cats to and from sterilization; maintaining records on all animals handled.
Returning animals to their rightful owners; overseeing fosters and adoption; capturing and transporting sick or injured wild animals.
Must be able to move animals or objects weighing up to 100 lbs.
Expected to work a substantial part of their day at the impound facility and/or office, the remainder of the time in the city capturing animals and responding to citizens.
Wear a uniform, work shifts, weekends and rotational stand-by duty as required.

Experience and Skills Required
Knowledge of photography for the posting of notices of captured animals.
Use proper English usage, grammar and spelling.
Obtain cooperation and compliance from members of the public; analyze a situation and adopt a course of action.
Exercise tact and independent judgment in dealing with the public; speak to a wide range of people.
Make simple mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
