☷White House Issues Proclamation on Missing Or Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day 2022

The White House has proclaimed Visit disclaimer page May 5 , 2022 , Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons ( MMIP ) Awareness Day: For generations , Indigenous persons , including American Indians , Alaska Natives , and Native Hawaiians , have been forced to mourn a missing or murdered loved one without the answers and support they deserve . On Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day , we remember these victims and their families and commit to working with Tribal Nations and Native communities to achieve justice and healing . The Federal Government has an obligation to ensure that cases of missing or murdered persons are met with swift and effective action . My Administration is fully committed to investigating and resolving these cases through a coordinated law enforcement response , as well as intervention and prevention efforts . We are also dedicated to researching the underlying causes of this violence and to working with Native communities to address them . Indigenous peoples are particularly at risk of sex and labor trafficking due to economic marginalization , environmental degradation , and violence through past and current colonization . Many may lack citizenship and access to necessities like housing , employment , and education , making them at risk of human trafficking and other forms of exploitation . Learn more about the work OTIP and others are doing to protect Indigenous peoples at risk of human trafficking by accessing the following resources: The Human Trafficking Leadership Academy ( HTLA ) Class 5 ' s Recommendations Report offers strategies for using culture as a protective factor to prevent trafficking among all Indigenous youth . The HTLA is comprised of survivor leaders and allied professionals . SOAR for Indigenous Communities Visit disclaimer page trains those serving Indigenous populations to better understand the issues surrounding human trafficking and to build trauma - informed and culturally responsive interventions to human trafficking in these communities . SOAR trainings are provided by OTIP ' s National Human Trafficking Training and Technical Assistance Center ( NHTTAC ) . The Missing and Murdered Native Americans ( MMNA ) — A Public Health Framework for Action describes the coordinated efforts the Administration for Children and Families is taking to combat violence towards Indigenous peoples . The Combatting Trafficking in Native Youth Toolkit ( PDF ) raises awareness to prevent the trafficking of Indigenous youth . The toolkit includes resources such as stories from survivors , safety tips , and suggestions to mobilize communities . The Department of Justice ' s Missing or Murdered Indigenous People: Culturally Based Prevention Strategies ( PDF ) article explores how Tribes can draw on their cultural resources to help protect their members from certain risk factors that can lead to them going missing or being murdered . The Administration for Native Americans ' ( ANA ) Keeping Us Whole: Preventing Missing and Murdered Indigenous People podcast series includes interviews with tribal leadership , federal partners , advocates , and others to raise awareness of the MMIP epidemic and increase prevention efforts . ANA provides grant support for locally determined projects designed to reduce or eliminate community problems and achieve community goals . Projects include efforts to prevent or address human traffickingOTIP ' s Victims of Human Trafficking in Native Communities ( VHT - NC ) Demonstration Program Visit disclaimer page funds organizations that will build , expand , and sustain organizational and community capacity to deliver services to Native American ( i . e . , American Indians , Alaska Natives , Native Hawaiians , and/or Pacific Islanders ) adults and minors who have experienced a severe form of human trafficking through the provision of direct services , assistance , and referrals .
