Well 4 Maintenance Activities
On Thursday , January 4th , the Town of Middleburg ' s contractors will be conducting maintenance activities at the Well 4 Treatment Plant . These activities are necessary to prepare the water treatment plant to return to service after two years of being inoperable .
The maintenance activities include a backwash cycle that requires water to be pulled from the Town ' s water mains at a high velocity , similar to flushing a fire hydrant . In past times , this activity has led to limited instances of discolored water for customers , specifically in the areas of W . Federal Street , Pendleton Street , and South Madison Street .
Discolored water is the result of naturally occurring elements in drinking water that settle over time in the water mains . When water is used at a high velocity , it can cause the settled elements to be "stirred up" and can cause slight discoloration . There is no health risk to the discolored water - all of the water is fully treated and meets all health standards .
If you do experience discolored water , please flush your COLD water lines for 10 - 15 minutes to clear the lines . You may also call the Town Office at 540 - 687 - 5152 so we can flush nearby hydrants .
The Town is taking on a number of projects to reduce instances of discolored water . These include:
- Well 4 Treatment Plant Repairs: when the Well 4 Treatment Plant is returned to service , the water produced for the Town will have much less of the naturally - occurring elements ( iron and manganese ) because they are removed through advanced filtration . This will reduce the amount of settled elements in the mains .
- The Town will conduct hydrant flushing in the coming weeks to clear out any residual elements/particles in the mains .
- The Town is under construction of a 64 , 000 gallon "clear well" for the Well 4 Treatment Plant that will allow the regular maintenance activities to pull water from a tank and not from the distribution system . This will eliminate the need to pull water from the distribution system at a high velocity and will help keep Well 4 operational for years to come .
Please contact the Town Office at 540 - 687 - 5152 with any questions .
