Voice of America ( VOA ) journalists were honored with two National Headliner Awards , which recognize outstanding reporting in the United States in 2021 . The project "The Mechanism" received second place for its digital presentation of a single features project , focusing on the threats faced by journalists in Mexico and the government ' s efforts to protect them . The team behind the project , consisting of Cristina Caicedo Smit , Victor Castillo , Guadalupe Rincon , Jessica Jerreat , and Amy Reifenrath , used artistic illustrations by Brian Williamson to convey the harrowing experience of a kidnapped reporter . VOA also secured third place for its coverage of the U . S . military ' s withdrawal from Afghanistan , titled "Mission ' s End: War and Withdrawal in Afghanistan . " The coverage , led by journalists Carla Babb , Ayesha Tanzeem , Kane Farabaugh , and Arif Aslan , encompassed various aspects of the withdrawal , from the crisis at Kabul airport to the experiences of veterans and those returning to the U . S . The National Headliner Awards are highly regarded in the field of journalism and have been presented since 1934 . VOA , which reaches over 326 million people worldwide in 48 languages , is funded by the U . S . Congress through USAGM .
