Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves visited the Brooklyn Navy Yard yesterday to tour the wide array of small businesses and manufacturers that are driving forward innovation in the city , including clean energy pioneer Amogy . The startup is looking to transform the heavy - duty transportation industry by providing a zero - emission and high - performance alternative energy solution using ammonia as a fuel . “Ensuring the U . S . remains a leader in the development of emerging technologies is vital to our competitiveness , said Deputy Secretary Graves . The Brooklyn Navy Yard is a reflection of American innovation at work . Domestic manufacturing enables us to build the industries of tomorrow and create jobs in the process . ”“Decarbonizing the heavy transportation sector is necessary to achieve net - zero emissions by 2050 and critical to the vitality of the US and global economy , ” said Seonghoon Woo , CEO at Amogy . Meeting this goal requires a robust portfolio of clean energy solutions to which Amogy is an essential partner . Amogy has already successfully demonstrated several impactful , practical applications of our carbon - free fuel technology and we are well on our way to providing viable solutions to decarbonize the industries that are the highest emitters of greenhouse gasses . Using its innovative technology solution , Amogy aims to reduce five billion metric tons of CO2 - eq emission by 2040 , accelerating the global journey towards Net Zero 2050 . By 2040 , Amogy aims to eliminate approximately five gigatonnes of CO2 globally , reducing 10 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions . The startup was founded in November 2020 in Brooklyn Navy Yard , and has raised $70M in funding to date , backed by the e - commerce giant Amazon , through its Climate Pledge Fund , the world’s largest oil company Saudi Aramco and more . While at the Brooklyn Navy Yard , Secretary Graves also visited New York - based jewelry maker Catbird and cutting - edge startup incubator New Lab . Led by Lindsay Greene , President & CEO of the Brooklyn Navy Yard , the tour shone a light on the collaborative and innovative nature of the Navy Yard ' s ecosystem and how it can serve as a national model for urban centers looking to grow their industrial sector . Since 2016 , The Department of Commerce , through the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s NY Manufacturing Extension Partnership ( NYMEP ) , has worked with 25 companies in the Brooklyn Navy Yard and provided the following types of services in the Financial Analysis/Assistance Service Suite , Growth Service Product Suite and Strategic/Business Management and Planning Services Suite .
