JOB SUMMARY
The
Help Desk Technician
performs a variety of Information Technology (IT) support and maintenance functions with minimal supervision. Responsibilities include providing technical support to staff, configuration of Port data and voice communication systems, the Port’s computer network and client-server software, and coordination of IT training and presentation resources.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Provide excellent customer service.
Provide quick and effective assistance with information technology systems.
Guide staff remotely and in person through troubleshooting and system maintenance.
Listen attentively to staff’s questions and concerns and offer optimal solutions.
Successfully prioritize tasks during busy periods and handle multiple interruptions with accuracy and reliability.
Perform network security tasks such as training users and promote security awareness, perform system security checks, etc.
Performs routine hardware upgrades and repairing of Windows-based client computers, servers, and various mobile devices.
Install, upgrade, and maintain client software including Microsoft Windows, Microsoft Office (including 365 apps) and other client-server applications.
Troubleshoot user hardware and software problems in a timely and professional manner.
Assists IT Manager and other IT Staff with project planning and completion.
Research new hardware and software needs based on supplied requirements. Prepares recommendations for IT Manager.
Assist co-workers with installing, managing, and maintaining LAN/WAN network hardware including switches, routers, and firewalls.
Regular and dependable attendance is an essential function of this position.
Stay up to date with current trends and technology.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
Valid Washington State driver’s license is required.
Experience installing, configuring and troubleshooting all types of hardware and software.
Must be able to pass multiple federal background checks and obtain security credentials to perform regular work within restricted locations and facilities.
Preferred:
Associate degree in Computer Science, Information Services, Data Processing, or a related field; or four (4) years of combined experience in information technology or a related field.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Basic technical knowledge of voice communications, including VOIP, and data networking systems.
Basic technical knowledge of microcomputer hardware and operating system software.
Understanding of word processing, spreadsheet, database, electronic mail, and scheduling software, maintenance, and repair.
Basic understanding of cloud-based solutions and services.
Operation and configuration of local and wide area networks.
Data and voice communication security issues.
Standard office practices.
Ability to:
Clearly convey instructions for system use and operation to users.
Work effectively with management, staff and outside parties.
Operate a variety of standard computer hardware and software.
Select, install and configure personal computers, components, devices and peripherals.
Diagnose hardware and software problems, identify alternative solutions, make and implement recommendations.
Communicate effectively with users who have varying levels of computer expertise.
Schedule and prioritize workload individually and with other staff members.
Maintain confidentiality of sensitive files and materials accessed, discussed or observed.
Understand and follow instructions.
Communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with diverse individuals, and to calmly and efficiently resolve problems.
Organize effectively, set priorities, manage workload, and handle multiple responsibilities in order to meet deadlines.
