The Columbus Fire Department has issued the following Press Release .

Yesterday evening at approximately 08:20PM , the Columbus Fire Department was alerted for a residential structure fire in the 1600 block of 12th Street . While en route , crews were notified that there were victims reported to be trapped . Upon arrival crews found smoke showing from a two story residence and received confirmation that two occupants were trapped in the residence . Crews began an aggressive rescue tactic to rescue the victims from the second story window . Prior to crews making entry , one occupant self - rescued . Crews then made entry and removed a second victim . The fire was quickly extinguished shortly after removal of the second victim . Both victims were transported to Columbus Community Hospital and their condition is unknown at this time . The home did suffer significant fire and water damage . The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the affected family .
Due to the quick actions of the initial arriving companies , the fire was contained to the second story of the residence . The fire is being investigated by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office .
