POSITION SUMMARY:
Perform both routine and skilled heavy, physical work in a variety of tasks such as installation, maintenance, repairs, and servicing of City streets, sewers, traffic signs, sidewalks, storm drains, landscaping and equipment. Operates trucks and a variety of hands and power tools related to work; may work independently using various methods of graffiti abatement and removal. This is an entry level class in Street Maintenance Worker series.
JOB DUTIES:
Cleans, maintains and repairs City streets, drains, catch basins, storm drains, traffic signs, traffic control painting and sign work and public works facilities throughout the City. Operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment including skip loaders, tractors, street sweepers; use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, pours and finishes concrete for curbs and sidewalks; perform heavy manual labor, crack sealing, repairing potholes, operate a concrete cutter, cement work, a striping machine, facility maintenance, painting, hot box, graffiti removal, backhoe operator.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
Common tools and equipment used in construction and maintenance work; basic safety precautions and procedures.
Ability to:
Communicate clearly and concisely in oral and written English. Follow oral and written instructions. Use a variety of hand operated and powered maintenance tools. Operate automotive equipment. Use independent judgement and initiative in work situations.
Licensing and Certificates
: Valid Class B California Commercial Driver’s license (CDL) with airbrake endorsement or ability to obtain a Class B CDL within 180 days of hire date.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Six months of work experience as a laborer in construction or maintenance work. Heavy equipment operator experience is a plus.
