In 2023 , the FBI in Atlanta got 196 complaints about sextortion , which is a huge jump from 2021 . They even helped out the FBI in Detroit with a case where they extradited two Nigerian guys who were sexually extorting a bunch of young guys and boys across the US . Sadly , one victim , a 17 - year - old named Jordan DeMay , ended up taking his own life in March 2022 . Usually , the victims are guys between 14 and 17 , but honestly , any kid can fall victim to this . And when it comes to financially motivated sextortion , the offenders are usually in places like Nigeria , Ivory Coast , or the Philippines . Hey everyone , the FBI wants to give a heads up to parents , teachers , and anyone taking care of kids about the dangers of online stuff that could lead to minors being pressured into doing sexual things . This kind of messed up situation called "sextortion" happens when someone forces a kid to send them explicit pictures or videos . Then , the creep threatens to release that stuff unless the victim keeps making more . These sickos are just looking to satisfy their own twisted desires . Now , when it comes to financially motivated sextortion , it ' s all about the money for these offenders . They force a minor to send explicit material and then threaten to leak it unless they get paid . And they usually ask for payment in things like gift cards , mobile payments , wire transfers , or even cryptocurrency . These jerks are all about the cash , not just getting off . This kind of stuff can seriously mess up victims and has even led to suicides . Between October 2021 and March 2023 , the FBI and Homeland Security Investigations got over 13 , 000 reports of financially motivated sextortion of minors . And there were at least 12 , 600 victims , mostly boys , and at least 20 suicides . Just in a six - month period from October 2022 to March 2023 , the FBI saw a 20% increase in reports of financially motivated sextortion cases involving minors compared to the same time the year before . If you or someone you know thinks they ' ve been a victim of sextortion or financially motivated sextortion , make sure to report it to the police right away .
