It ' s important to act fast if you or someone you know is a victim of sextortion or financially motivated sextortion . Report it to the police or call the FBI hotline at 1 - 800 - CALL - FBI . Stay safe out there! This kind of crime can seriously harm victims and has even led to suicides . From October 2021 to March 2023 , the FBI received over 13 , 000 reports of sextortion involving minors , with at least 12 , 600 victims , mostly boys , and 20 suicides . And in the six months from October 2022 to March 2023 , there was a 20% increase in these incidents compared to the previous year . Financially motivated sextortion is when offenders coerce minors into creating explicit material and then demand payment to keep it hidden . They usually ask for things like gift cards , mobile payments , wire transfers , or cryptocurrency . These offenders are mainly located in West African countries or Southeast Asian countries .
