SALARY RANGE: $36,756
- $55,174 (Grade 8)

General Statement of Duties
The Town of Black Mountain is seeking to hire a dependable and hardworking team player as an addition to the Sanitation Division of the Public Works Department. This position will be required to share responsibilities in operating heavy, motorized equipment used for the collection of solid waste/yard debris as well as loading trash, recycling, yard waste and white goods into appropriate equipment. This position will operate under the direct supervision of the Public Works Director with general supervision performed by the supervisor.
Essential Duties and Tasks:
Operates a variety of heavy motorized equipment used in the Sanitation industry, including rear load and knuckle boom trucks in the collection of solid waste, recycling, brush, and white goods along specified routes in residential zones as well as the downtown commercial district.
Safely drives on pre-established routes providing timely pick up of solid waste and recycling by placing it in the back of a rear load truck either manually or by pushing toter or tipper; lifts and carries trash bags, bulk items and containers to the truck for disposal; climbs onto and off of the rear truck step to collect waste; operates the packing mechanism to compact waste into the truck; unloads refuse trucks at the landfill, transfer station, recycling center or similar facility.
Ensures all garbage and recycling are picked up and transferred properly; clean-up of scattered refuse and recycling; cleans up the area around accidental waste/debris spills and ensures citizen’s containers are replaced properly with no damage; customer service requests may require back door service pickups; places tags on improper refuse containers and waste.
Exhibits a positive attitude towards co-workers and departmental goals while being a team player; provides excellent customer service to residents to include answering questions they may have or directing them to contact the necessary personnel.
Performs daily pre and post trip inspections on the truck reporting any needed repairs or maintenance; assists with repair/maintenance when necessary.
Performs preventive maintenance on equipment, such as checking and filling fluid levels and greasing as necessary.
Maintains a clean vehicle both inside and out; cleans behind the compactor blade with shovel and hoe, sprays and cleans the hopper and truck weekly and as needed; maintains clean parking area.
Reports any safety or customer service-related issues immediately.
Prepares, maintains, and submits required company and regulation mandated reports, documents, and logs; completes, collects, and provides daily paperwork and information to supervisor including weight tickets and inspection reports.
Additional Job Functions:
Performs all positional work functions in the Sanitation Division and Public Works Department as needed.
Must comply with all Department of Transportation and State requirements concerning operational requirements of commercial motor vehicles.
May be required to work weekends, holidays, emergency situations, or special events as needed.
Performs any additional job duties that may be assigned by the Supervisor or Director.
Education & Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency with at least one (1) year of heavy equipment experience with preference including solid waste collection.
Licensing and Certifications:
Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B), or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire.
Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships as required by work assignments.
Ability to think creatively in all areas for the purpose of increasing efficiency and effectiveness.
Ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written forms.
Ability to analyze situations to pinpoint problems and assist with solving problems or identifying sources of obstacles.
Ability to maintain written records and service responses.
Physical Work Requirements/Work Environment:
Very Heavy work involves exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally, or more than 50 pounds of force frequently or more than 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; physical demand requirements are in excess of those for heavy work. This position requires visual and audible acuity to include the ability to reach above the shoulder, twist, bend, stoop, repetitive movements of elbows (handling), repetitive movements of wrists (fingering), squatting (crouching), kneeling, and climbing.
Physically able to push or pull independently (unassisted) 50 pounds between 800 and 1000 times per day.
Physically able to lift independently (unassisted) 50 pounds from the ground to waist height between 800 and 1000 times a day.
Physically able to get up and down from the cab of a commercial motor vehicle between 800 and 1000 times a day.
Physically able to bend at the waist and knees between 800 and 1000 times a day.
Physically able to work in a variety of environmental conditions concerning temperatures and weather variations to include heat, cold, snow, rain, wind, fumes, odor, and dust.
The employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
