The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District will temporarily close both the Riverwalk Trail and Bluff Trail at the Sells Avenue Trailhead on Thursday , January 4 and Friday , January 5 to remove a very large cottonwood tree that has become hazardous .
The tree is dead and was recently damaged by a fire . Due to the size of the tree and its location , it needs to be removed as soon as possible for safety reasons . On Thursday and Friday , Colorado Tree Solutions will remove the tree . In order to accomplish this work safely , we will have to close both the Riverwalk and Bluff Trails near the Sells Avenue Trailhead , as well as the Sells Avenue parking lot . You will be able to park at the lot adjacent to the pond and walk to the west . Trail users will also be able to access John Griffin Regional Park from the Reynolds Trailhead and walk to the west , but we will have temporary closures the further west you travel . The trail to Mackenzie will remain open . We apologize for any inconvenience , but for safety reasons , we must close the affected trail area while the tree is removed . The goal is to have all trails reopened by Saturday . The Cañon City Area Recreation and Park District appreciates your cooperation and understanding .
