Hey everyone! I ' m Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves , and I ' m really excited to be here today at the NTIA Spectrum Policy Symposium Cybersecurity . I want to talk to you all about the Biden - Harris Administration ' s awesome effort to build and execute a National Spectrum Strategy and secure the future of wireless communications in the US . This strategy is super important for our economy and national security , and it ' s a big priority for the Department of Commerce . It ' s going to reshape spectrum policy and help us unleash America ' s technological genius through new wireless services and better government operations . Spectrum is crucial for wireless communication and it ' s one of our most valuable resources . It affects so many aspects of our lives like 5G , Wi - Fi , GPS , radios , TVs , weather forecasting , and even national defense . It ' s not just important for the present , but it ' s key to securing our future . Spectrum is going to drive a ton of economic growth in the next decade , potentially trillions of dollars . This growth will help us stay on top as a global leader in technology and also protect our national security . We ' re in a competition with other countries , especially China , over critical and emerging technologies , and spectrum is at the center of that . We need to make sure our spectrum policy beats their efforts and allows the US and our allies to compete on a level playing field . President Biden gets it and he ' s taking action to address it . Our Department has already made some amazing accomplishments . We ' ve invested a historic amount in broadband connectivity through the Broadband Equity , Access , and Deployment Program , which is giving millions of Americans affordable and reliable high - speed internet . And our Wireless Innovation Fund is helping us lead the way in wireless technology with a $1 . 5 billion investment . These are just a couple of examples of the important work we ' re doing . And as we continue to push forward with these and other initiatives , it ' s crucial to focus on forward - looking spectrum management . As the Secretary mentioned , spectrum is a limited resource . The careful allocation of spectrum and decisions made by the United States ' spectrum managers have allowed us to maintain our technological and innovation leadership for decades – and we must maintain that level of care and strategic thinking moving forward . Spectrum management will play a vital role in private - sector and government wireless technologies , such as 5G/6G , Wi - Fi , space exploration and commerce , climate and environmental goals , and global security . That ' s why it ' s even more important for us to collaborate and strike the right balance in spectrum usage , while also providing incentives for investment and research and development . Achieving this balance requires careful planning , focus , and coordination – a shared vision that will guide responsible spectrum management . And that vision includes you . We need the support of stakeholders like you who understand the urgency of the situation and the importance of spectrum in driving our country ' s security , prosperity , and leadership . We need your partnership and involvement to ensure the success of the National Spectrum Strategy . We need your expertise and skills to help build an inclusive economy and a national defense that protects all Americans . Our future relies on it .
