According to the EPA , in 2018 , Americans threw away 3 . 9 million tons of aluminum waste . The total recycling rate for aluminum items was only 34 . 9 percent . If everyone were to recycle metal , we could greatly reduce the demand for new materials that need to be mined from the earth .
Should aluminum cans be crushed before recycling them?
No , generally , aluminum cans should not be crushed before they are recycled . Crushed cans are harder for machines to detect when being sorted at recycling facilities .
Contamination
Deciding to recycle items is just the first step . You also want to make sure the items are recycled correctly . Food waste in cans causes contamination at the recycling facility .
Try rinsing or scraping the residue off to clean it . “Spatula - clean” is clean enough to recycle!
