Hanover County will begin accepting applications in January for its real estate tax relief program for elderly or permanently disabled residents . Participants save an average of $1 , 750 on their tax bill and nearly half pay no County real estate tax at all .
This year the Board of Supervisors substantially expanded the program by increasing both the income threshold and the amount of tax relief available .
To qualify , property owners must be age 65 or older or permanently disabled . They must have a net worth of $400 , 000 or less and a combined household gross income below $60 , 000 . Net worth does not include the value of one’s home and up to 10 acres of land surrounding it .
Tax relief is based on a sliding scale . Qualified residents with income of less than $30 , 000 will pay no tax; those with an income of $30 , 001 - $40 , 000 receive 80% tax relief; those with an income of $40 , 001 - $50 , 000 receive 55% tax relief; and those with an income of $50 , 001 - $60 , 000 receive a 30% reduction .
Last year , Hanover’s tax relief program saved qualifying County residents $2 . 3 million in real estate taxes .
Applicants must own their property and have lived on it on Dec . 31 . Those in a hospital or extended - care facility may qualify if their home is not rented or leased . Disabled applicants must provide certification of disability . All information is kept confidential .
“This is a great program designed to help those taxpayers who most need the help , ” said Scott Harris , Hanover’s Commissioner of the Revenue . “The increases in tax relief now available are very welcome to a large segment of our population . We invite all residents who think they might qualify to call our office . ”
