Pilot Care Response Program Holds First Community Meeting
' Innovative Care Response ' Pilot Program aims to help Transform Mental Health Crisis Response
Cleveland , OH– 2/16/24 – Yesterday evening marked the first of several community meetings to share information and gather community input about a pioneering
Care Response pilot program that will launch in the 44105 and 44102 zip codes later in 2024 . The innovative Care Response pilot program is designed to broaden the spectrum of crisis care with a focus on compassion and health by having mental health professionals and peer supporters respond to calls for individuals having a mental health or addiction crisis rather than the police . This collaborative endeavor , spearheaded by the
Alcohol , Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services ( ADAMHS ) Board of Cuyahoga Countyand the
Cleveland Department of Public Health
, urges Cleveland residents to actively engage in shaping this essential program .
During the gathering at Miles Elementary , the Care Response program was unveiled , highlighting the deployment of specialized , unarmed teams comprising a licensed mental health professional and a peer support specialist . These teams are tasked with addressing mental health and addiction crises instead of the police . This innovative approach departs from conventional police - led responses , prioritizing tailored and compassionate care for adults in distress , particularly when public safety isn ' t jeopardized .
The meeting last night , February 15 , provided an opportunity for residents to share their experiences and feedback as the program is developed , ensuring it meets the individual needs and priorities of Cleveland ' s communities .
"In launching this groundbreaking initiative , we recognize that the heart of its success is the community’s buy - in and utilization , "said
Scott Osiecki
, CEO of the ADAMHS Board .
"This pilot represents more than a new program; it is a vow to our community to deliver services with empathy , effectiveness , and a keen sensitivity to the unique needs of our residents . ”
Dr . David Margolius
, Director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health , echoed this sentiment . "The collaboration ahead is about transforming our approach to care for individuals in crisis . We invite the community to join us , share their voices , and help evolve a mental health crisis response system that reflects the needs , values , and aspirations of Cleveland ' s residents . ”
The City of Cleveland Department of Public Health and ADAMHS Board are committed to engaging the community in the development of the Care Response pilot program .
