☷Philadelphia Man Sentenced to Seven Years for Illegally Possessing a Handgun

PHILADELPHIA – United States Attorney Jennifer Arbittier Williams announced that Mark Manigault , 44 , of Philadelphia , PA was sentenced to seven years in prison , and three years of supervised release by Senior United States District Court Judge R . Barclay Surrick after having been found guilty of being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm . In February 2020 , the defendant , a four - time convicted felon and repeat parole violator , was convicted after trial of one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm . The charges stemmed from an incident in September 2016 during which Manigault possessed a 9mm semi - automatic pistol , loaded with 12 rounds of ammunition while loitering on a street in West Philadelphia with another armed man . Investigating Philadelphia Police officers found two firearms hidden in the wheel well of a parked car nearby . Using surveillance footage from the bar and from a private residence down the street , officers determined that Manigault and the other individual possessed the firearms and had placed them in the wheel wells . “Prosecuting , deterring and preventing violent crime in Philadelphia are top priorities of this Office and our ‘All Hands On Deck’ initiative , ” said U . S . Attorney Williams . “Illegal gun possession poses a serious threat to public safety because it often leads to violence; therefore , we are committed to working with the Philadelphia Police Department and our law enforcement partners to combat this threat . ”“ATF will always investigate violent criminals found in illegal possession of firearms , ” said Matthew Varisco , Special Agent in charge of ATF’s Philadelphia Field Division . “Working with our law enforcement partners and the U . S . Attorney’s Office , we will do everything within our power to reduce violent crime in Philadelphia by holding violent offenders accountable for continually disregarding the law . ”This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods ( PSN ) , a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and make our neighborhoods safer for everyone . The Department of Justice reinvigorated PSN in 2017 as part of the Department’s renewed focus on targeting violent criminals , directing all U . S . Attorney’s Offices to work in partnership with federal , state , local , and tribal law enforcement and the local community to develop effective , locally - based strategies to reduce violent crime . The case was investigated by Philadelphia Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol , Tobacco , Firearms , and Explosives , and is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Thomas M .
