The Town of Bedford is searching for a part-time Saturday and back-up driver for the Bedford Local Transit (BLT). This service is funded in part by the MBTA and operates a door-to-door service. Duties include managing rider calls and planning the day’s schedule, assisting older and disabled riders in and out of the vehicle safely and securing wheelchairs and walkers inside the vehicle, transporting Bedford residents in the 8-seater passenger van to locations within Bedford and other nearby destinations, fare collection and turnovers, maintenance of daily travel logs, vehicle checks and ensuring accurate documentation for regular MBTA and Town reports is required.
Candidates must be courteous, patient, friendly and tactful when dealing with the public. Maintaining confidentiality of riders is a must. A valid Class D driver’s license with an incident-free driving history is required. First Aid and CPR certification is also required (or ability to obtain such certificate). A driving knowledge of the Town of Bedford is preferred. Candidates must be willing to submit to a pre-employment physical and random drug/alcohol testing in accordance with Department of Transportation regulations. A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel/Office is required in order to maintain daily records and reports. Drivers must comply with the Massachusetts Rural Transit Assistance Training (MArtap) requirements to maintain driver competencies on hire and annually.
Hours for this position are 10am - 3pm every Saturday. The week day, back up schedule for the BLT is between Monday through Friday from 7:30am – 3:30pm. Applicants are required to be available for week day back up driving and every Saturday. Weekday back up driving hours vary within the hours of operation depending on the full-time driver needs. Applicants are, in addition, required to attend mandatory, MArtap and Town trainings which are held during the week and times vary. This is a part-time position with a salary of $24.02 per hour and not eligible for benefits.
