Incumbent serves as a Part-time Nature Staff of the Parks and Recreation Department, responsible for assisting in developing, coordinating and supervising nature related programs and maintaining the Cool Creek Nature Center.
Position Summary:
Under occasional supervision, assist Chief Naturalist and Naturalist Staff with the following:
The following duties will be considered normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
-Serve as a front-line interpreter for patrons visiting and contacting the nature center.
-Assemble exhibits, collections, displays, materials for nature center.
-Implement camp programs, classes and exhibits for nature center.
-Serve as staff member to help open, close and maintain the nature center and greenhouse, and communicate with visiting public.
-Maintain daily log for nature center.
-Operate nature center gift shop.
-Serve as a staff member for janitorial duties at nature center and greenhouse.
-Implement nature programs and day camps and various other environmental programs.
-Conduct animal talks, puppet shows, and other interpretive programs to park visitors.
-Assist scheduled guest speakers and instructors for classes and programs during such events.
-Maintaining the greenhouse and related exhibit inside.
-Lead nature hikes and bird walks, interpret information for participants.
-Presentation of special events.
-Maintain various document files, and prepares periodic reports as required.
-Conduct vegetation and wildlife studies at the parks to be used in nature programs.
-Organize activities, games, songs, and refreshments for programs.
-Maintain prairie and garden, such as periodically removing weeds around signage, and removing litter.
-Assist in the renting of the Nature Center.
-Assist in animal husbandry related to the display animal of the Nature Center. Feed, clean, and research care as needed and/or assigned.
-Assist volunteers working for our department.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, with the public, staff members, volunteers and supervisors using proper grammar, diction and spelling.
-Ability to speak in front of groups and communicate at the level of the group's ability to understand the material being presented.
-Ability to work after-hour events and weekends.
-Ability to use department equipment and tools, including typewriter, computer, printer, telephone, fax, hand tools, cash register, and artists supplies.
-Ability to lead and conduct nature hikes, walks, campfire, activities, and programs throughout pack facilities during varying weather conditions including heat, cold, rain and humidity and within pre-scheduled time constraints.
-Ability to remain self-motivated and productive when delegated work is not assigned.
-Ability to work on several tasks at the same time, and complete duties effectively amidst frequent distractions and interruptions.
-Ability to work with others in a team environment, and maintain appropriate, respectful interrelationships with co-workers.
-Knowledge of policies, procedures, guidelines, program, park grounds, safety precautions, and group organizational methodologies.
-Ability to competently serve the public with diplomacy and respect, including occasional encounters with irate/hostile persons.
-Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, and appropriately respond to constructive criticism.
-Ability to maintain valid Indiana driver's license in order to operate a vehicle to travel to all park facilities.
-Ability to prepare hand-outs, informational materials, displays, letters, memos and reports.
