In Boise , Idaho , the Oregon Army National Guard is stepping up its sniper game by introducing the new MK 22 Precision Sniper Rifles . Sgt . Tyler Takagi , a member of the sniper team , explained that the Army needed an upgrade from their old sniper rifles , the M2010 and M107 . They chose the MK 22 because it offers more precision than the M107 and has a longer range than the M2010 . According to Takagi , the Army wanted to update their weapon system while still keeping it precise , as the . 50 caliber rifles were not super accurate . The MK 22 has a modular design , which means that sniper sections can easily swap barrels and bolts to fire different types of ammunition , such as 7 . 62mm , . 300 Norma Magnum , and . 338 Norma Magnum . This flexibility allows snipers to customize the rifle based on the specific mission requirements . Takagi , who also works as a police officer , finds great satisfaction in serving both his community and his country . He appreciates the benefits that come with being in the National Guard , such as getting your college education paid for and forming lifelong friendships with fellow soldiers . To keep up with the times , the Oregon Army National Guard conducted training on the MK 22 this month as part of their efforts to modernize their equipment and provide Citizen - Soldiers with the latest technologies . This modular sniper rifle significantly enhances the organization ' s killing power during federal missions .
