   The City of Fernandina Beach has openings for the following seasonal (up to 40 hours per week) position:
   Title: Ocean-Rescue Lifeguard I
   Department: Fire
   FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
   Reports to: Ocean-Rescue Lifeguard III
   Pay Grade: 124 ($15.00 – $18.10)
   Minimum Qualifications
   A.Education and Experience:
   Must possess high school diploma or GED, or currently be a student.
   Must be at least 16 years of age.
   B.Certifications
   Candidates must possess a valid American Safety and Health Institute Basic Life Support, BLS for Healthcare Providers and Professional Rescuers CPR certification.
   Candidates must possess a valid American Safety and Health Institute Advanced First Aid certification consisting of no less than 21 hours of training.
   Candidates must possess a valid American Safety and Health Institute Bloodborne Pathogens certification.
   Must complete 40 Hour Fernandina Beach Fire Department Division of Ocean Rescue Recruit Academy.
   C.Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
   Candidate must complete pre-employment physical and ability test consisting of the following:
   1.500 meter swim in 10:00 or less
   2.Tread water 5:00 minutes
   3.Underwater swim 15 yards
   4.Dive and retrieve object from a depth of 7-10 feet
   Must have knowledge of proper safety and health procedures and precautions.
   Must possess the ability to swim strongly and handle frightened victims in water, and the ability to swim 500 meters over a measured course in ten minutes or less.
   Effective oral communication skills required.
   Must have above average physical endurance and possess adequate vision, hearing acuity, physical ability and stamina to perform the duties of an open water lifeguard.
   Knowledge of public beach accesses preferred.
   General Description
   Responsible work ensuring the safety of swimmers by watching the ocean for swimmers in distress, dangerous currents, or marine life. Perform rescues alone and with the assistance from other Lifeguards. Perform appropriate follow-up procedures, including the proper use of equipment in the performance of first aid.
   Essential Functions
   1.Attends in-service training for rescuers.
   2.Sits for extended periods of time in a stand, monitoring the ocean and swimmers.
   3.Enforces beach rules and regulations.
   4.Works with other Ocean Rescue Lifeguards in ensuring the safety of swimmers.
   5.Performs first aid and CPR.
   6.Rescues victims in distress.
   7.Assists the public in a courteous, but firm manner.
   8.Maintains assigned equipment in a ready state.
   9.Performs safety checks on all equipment in use.
   10.Attends and participates in Ocean Rescue staff meetings as required.
   11.Reads and interprets manuals to ensure safe and efficient operation of all equipment.
   12.Complies with OSHA Safety and Health rules.
   13.Performs other duties as assigned.
   Essential Physical Skills
   Acceptable eyesight and hearing (with/without correction), sitting, walking, running, standing, kneeling, bending, climbing, swimming, heavy lifting and carrying (up to 100 lbs.). Reasonable accommodations will be made for otherwise qualified individuals with a disability.
   Environmental Conditions
   Works outside in various weather conditions with exposure to ultra-violet radiation for extended hours on a daily basis.
   Swims in the ocean and river in sometimes hazardous currents and with dangerous marine life.
   Occasionally works in an office environment.
