The City of Newton will cap off its Sesquicentennial celebration this weekend with a community block party on Main Street .
The Newton150 Summer Bash is loosely based on the downtown street dances that were held as part of the Chisholm Trail Festival ( 1984 - 2012 ) and was inspired by a vintage photo ( circa 1910 ) of a Ferris wheel on Newton’s Main Street during a downtown festival . The event will feature:
A street dance with live music from
The Astronauts
and opening act
Wheat State Revival
16 Wichita - area food trucks and a beer garden hosted by Sand Creek Festivals
A 50 - foot Ferris wheel from
Big Round Wheel
Bounce houses from Keep It Hoppin’
Yard games , chalk art , and other activities presented by
Harvey County D - FY
Food and festivities for families begin at 4 p . m . , and live music begins at 6 p . m . There will also be a ribbon - cutting at 4 p . m . to dedicate the new Newton Historical Mural near 4th and Main .
The event is free , with charges only for food purchases and to ride the Ferris wheel ( $2 per ticket ) .
Community partners including the Harvey County Historical Society , Newton Public Schools , Newton Public Library , Carriage Factory Art Gallery , and Newton Area Chamber of Commerce have contributed to the planning of Sesquicentennial events .
The year - long anniversary celebration is sponsored by AGCO , Bethel College , BNSF Railway , Bunting , INTRUST Bank , Koehn Painting , NMC Health , Prairie View , Rotary Club of Newton , and Union State Bank .
