"My 9 - 1 - 1 call must not be important , because they put me on hold . "
   This is false . All 9 - 1 - 1 calls are important , and
   every
9 - 1 - 1 call must be answered quickly and triaged appropriately . 9 - 1 - 1 dispatchers often receive numerous calls at once , sometimes for the same incident being reported by many , but often for separate emergencies occurring simultaneously .
Because 9 - 1 - 1 staffing is limited , your 9 - 1 - 1 call may be put on hold , even if it is an emergency , so that the dispatcher can answer and triage other incoming 9 - 1 - 1 calls . If that happens , the dispatcher will come back to you . Most often , they already have responders headed your way , but they still need to get additional information from you or give you important instructions .
If you are put on hold by 9 - 1 - 1 , they thank you for your patience . Please understand that they will get back to speaking to you as quickly as they can .

Department Spotlight: Road and Bridge Department
The Missoula County Public Works Road and Bridge Department not only fix County - maintained roads and bridges in the summer , but plow roads in the worst of weather in the winter , too .
Missoula County is responsible for maintaining approximately 447 miles of road as well as 465 bridges and culverts . Of the 447 miles , approximately 263 are paved and 180 are gravel . The Public Works Road and Bridge Department do things like road repair , snow removal , right - of - way maintenance , paving , graveling , grading and dust abatement .
Though the County maintains 447 miles of road , funding to provide that maintenance is limited , which means road crew staff work extra hard to prioritize roads based on the road’s traffic level and maintenance urgency . Some maintenance can be performed quickly , such as patching potholes or plowing roads , while other maintenance is more complex and takes time and funding , such as repaving a whole section of road or replacing a bridge . The Road and Bridge Department is constantly finding ways to be creative with the funds they have to maximize the maintenance they can get done .
They also work tirelessly in the winter to ensure the main roads are clear for commuters . When it snows , the road crew begins plowing roads outside city limits between 5 and 6 a . m . following a snowstorm , with the goal of having school bus routes cleared first .
